Why Do Some Dogs Have Allergic Reactions to Food?

Before we look at what I think is one of the best food for dogs with allergies, it’s worth understanding why dogs get allergies from some foods, so we know how hypoallergenic food can help reduce the risk.

It’s crucial to note that ‘hypoallergenic’ doesn’t guarantee a reaction-free experience for all dogs. However, most dogs typically tolerate high-quality hypoallergenic food well. For dogs with a history of food allergies, it’s essential to introduce any new food cautiously. Start with small amounts and observe for any immediate reactions over a few hours.

If the dog reacts well, then gradually increase the new food but be vigilant for up to 6-8 weeks.

Why some dogs have allergic reactions:

Dogs can develop allergic reactions to food when their immune system incorrectly identifies a specific protein in the food as a threat. This misidentification triggers an immune response, causing symptoms like skin irritation, itching, gastrointestinal upset, or ear infections.

Common allergens in dog food include proteins from beef, chicken, dairy, and certain grains. Each dog’s reaction can vary, with some experiencing immediate symptoms and others showing signs over time.

How Hypoallergenic Dog Food Works

Hypoallergenic dog food works by eliminating or reducing ingredients known to commonly cause allergic reactions in dogs.

  1. Limited Ingredients: These foods often use a minimal number of ingredients to reduce the chances of an allergic reaction.
  2. High-Quality Proteins: They use fresh meat, fish, and poultry, which are less likely to contain additives or contaminants that could trigger allergies.
  3. Grain-Free Options: Many hypoallergenic foods avoid grains like wheat or corn, which can be allergenic for some dogs.
  4. Quality Control: Ensuring the food is free from contaminants and additives that could trigger allergies.

A great example of a dog food company which follows those rules is Clydach Farm. All their products are grain free, hypoallergenic and made with quality ingredients.

I would never state that one particular dog food is ‘the best’, however, Clydach Farm dog food is, in my opinion, one of the best commercial dog foods available.

A Welsh company, (the name probably gave it away!) Clydach Farm was founded in 2012. I discovered their dog food in 2019 and began recommending it to people who wanted the practicality of commercially made dog food, with the knowledge it was a healthy choice for their dogs.

With no grains or gluten in their products, Clydach Farm uses quality British fish and meat which meets their high ethical standards – and they are high standards. The following is a quote directly from them:

As with all of our products, we never use artificial colours, or preservatives. We ethically source our ingredients, and buy as local as possible. We never use any GM or potential GM contaminated ingredients in our products. All products are endorsed and approved by Vets.

The company is very open and honest regarding the ingredients used in their food, and they are always responsive to inquiries about their products. They offer a diverse selection of flavours, including duck, salmon, lamb, chicken and turkey. Their product range caters to all life stages and activity, from puppies to active working dogs.

Not only is this food beneficial for dogs with allergies, but the absence of common allergenic ingredients also makes it a healthier choice for all dogs, offering a nutritious alternative to foods containing these potential allergens.

Carbohydrates

Instead of using grain as a carbohydrate – a common trigger for allergic reactions in dogs, Clydach farm uses sweet potato instead – a great source of dietary fibre and many vitamins and minerals.

In my opinion, Clydach Farm Hypoallergenic food is a fantastic choice for dog owners who require the ease of a commercial dog food, whilst ensuring their pet’s nutritional needs are completely fulfilled.

Are there any downsides to Clydach Farm Dog Food? I have to be honest and admit that I can’t find any downsides. Perhaps the price is a little prohibitive to some people, but the products fit neatly into the premium bracket alongside other quality brands. It’s a price you’d expect to pay for such high quality.

It’s hard not to echo the glowing reviews for Clydach Farm on Amazon and Trustpilot, and I’ll continue to recommend it to people who want a commercial dog food for their pet.
